A Dozen Steps to be taken to achieve SUCCESS

Twelve Essentials for Success

1. Work in a Diverse Environment
Learning from people who are different from you - and recognizing your commonalities - is an important part of your education and essential preparation for the world you will join.

2. Manage Time and Priorities
Managing how and on what you spend your time, demonstrates your ability to prioritize and spend your time wisely on the activities that will make you marketable in today’s market. Staying in control of your life is essential to your overall well-being.

3. Acquire Knowledge
Learning how to learn is just as important as the knowledge itself. You will continue to learn every day for the rest of your life. So it is important that you recognize the lessons that your experiences teach you. The liberal arts curriculum encourages life-long learning. Take advantage of your ability to take a variety of classes and get involved on campus. Learning about yourself is just as important about learning about a particular subject matter that interests you.

4. Think Critically
Employers value the ability to analyze a situation rationally. Developing solid critical thinking skills means you will have the confidence to handle autonomy and make sound decisions.

5. Communicate Effectively
Developing listening, interpreting and speaking skills is just as important as reading and writing. Become conscious of your speech patterns and habits. Respond to people by finding something unique in their ideas without only considering your personal experiences. Connect to what they are saying, not what you want to say in response.

6. Solve Problems
This is something we do naturally everyday; understand the process and mind-set of successful problem solving and you will more easily handle the bigger challenges that come your way.

7. Contribute to a Team
Your ability to work with others is vital. Know when to lead and when to follow, and appreciate different group dynamics.

8. Navigate across Boundaries
Life is filled with boundaries - good and bad. Discover how to avoid the boundaries that become barriers so that you do not hamper the ability to collaborate with other people. Also, learn how to create positive boundaries to boost communication among others.

9. Perform with Integrity
It only takes one negative event/interaction to destroy years of good faith and favorable relationships. It’s important to develop a code of ethics and principles to guide you through your life.

10. Develop Professional Competencies
The end of college is the beginning of a new education. Build on what you already know and keep learning new skills; no matter what career path you take, your job will challenge you to grow and develop in ways you haven’t imagined.

11. Balance Work and Life
You have a lot to accomplish in, essentially, only 24 hours.  Know when to say no and confidently stand by your decisions. Each person has his/her own needs and interests. Strive to meet your own expectations for a fulfilling collegiate and life experience.

12. Embrace Change
Just about every aspect of life is in a constant state of change. No matter how you feel about change, you have to learn to deal with it.
